Are New Year's resolutions worth it?

Well, they got us this far.

In 2014, I made a New Year's resolution to start doing some work independently. That led to the start of Volition Project. So there's a dual meaning: On the one hand, it refers to an effort to give consumers more volition - control over their lives - by helping brands enable it. On the other hand, it means pursuing my own volition - doing the kind of work that means the most to me.

So Volition Project really started as a concrete effort on January 1, 2014. By March I had set up the company, and by April I had a website and was working on it full time. By June I had paying clients.

So now, at the start of 2017, Volition Project is entering its fourth year, with full appreciation for the potential power of New Year's resolutions. What's on the list for 2017?

  1. Winning new clients and projects in cooperation with some great independent partners that I have met over the last three years. They are fantastic and we do great work together.

  2. Pursuing brands even if there are no pre-existing relationships to build on. Not easy.

  3. Diversifying the ways we do business: hourly rates, fixed prices, and hopefully adding revenue share and equity to the mix - whatever is truly right for the work.
